She was new-- alright, perhaps 'new' wasn't the correct way to put it. It had been a few years since her arrival here at Al's apartment; 'newer' is a better way to put it. The prospector had been the first, then Jessie and Bullseye- and she, Dakota, had come last. Even with the four of them together; they were yet to be a complete set. The cherry on top; the icing on the cake- had yet to be found.
A Sheriff Woody.
If Al were to find him one day; they would all be together- complete. The entire Round-Up Gang; the deputy, the prospector, the stead, the sheriff, and the singer. What could possibly be better! Well…perhaps one thing.
Both of the Round-Up girls, those being Jessie and Dakota- agreed that, maybe, it would better to be with a child. To be played with for hours on end; and at the end of the day, know that they were making a someone happy. Although she kept it to herself; Dakota didn't much care for sitting in the bleak, brown, cardboard box- collecting dust. What kind of existence was this-- for a toy? But just when the wait was becoming tiresome; unbearable- the kindly prospector would step in and remind both of the girls that they needn't fret. Woody would be found one day; it was only a matter of time. Then, it would be off to the museum! The Kanishi Toy Museum; all the way in Japan! And while Dakota didn't know exactly where that was- (Though she did recall her previous owner, Molly, owning a large travel book with colorful pictures of Europe- which she understood Japan was near, at least.) It sounded wonderful! Children coming to see them everyday? Everyday! What a life!
It started out as a normal day- all of the toys could hear Al clattering around the apartment loudly; his usual negative mumbling and the sound of his keys jingling in the door's lock format he outside.
And then they were alone.
As always; they waiting for a few moments in the silence to make sure he was gone. A year or so back, they had gotten out as soon as he left; Jessie had almost been caught moving when he returned for his wallet. They didn't want a repeat of that near-disastrous incident. When they were all sure it was safe; Bullseye was the first to pop out of the box- galloping around the apartment floor happily, glad to be out of the box after the long, boring night. "Oh, Bullseye, are you glad to be out of the box?" Jessie asked coyly, laughing as she swung her leg over the box's flap and ran to play with the over exhilarated stuffed horse. Meanwhile, Dakota helped the helped Pete out of the box- a difficult feat, since he had his own box. "Here you go!" Dakota smiles as she pushes the case out, Pete offering her his own thankful grin; "Oh thank you, dear."
Despite the fact that there were no children to play with them; toys were resourceful creatures. Hours passed and they played a multitude of games amongst themselves; often involving the Woody's Round-Up merchandise that littered the room. All four of them just happened to be in the middle of a pretend game of 'Save the Critters' when they heard the heavy, tell-tale footsteps of Al coming down the hall. They scattered- all of them diving into the box quickly to escape the prying eyes of a human. As far as Al knew; they had been there all day. Inanimate.
The door swung open; and Al's usual angry cursing was replaced by gleeful murmurs and squeals. What in the world had he bought now? Dakota wondered silently; suddenly disappointed she couldn't see out into the room. The sound of one of their glass cases squeaking opening and then clicking closed made the toys give each other confused look in the darkness.
10 minutes passed, then 20, then almost a half an hour before they could here their rotund owner on his phone; "-Yeah yeah yeah, I'll be right there! And we're gonna do this commercial in one take because I am in the middle of something really important!" He yelled angrily, the quiet beep of the phone hanging up followed. Laughing with glee, Al finished up with; "You my little cowboy friend are gonna make me big buck-buck-bucks!" The sound of his chuckling faded as he exited the portent and it faded down the hall…
Cowboy friend…? Could he mean…?
A Sheriff Woody.
